Appointed to the Homeland Security Advisory Council

Long Island City, NY—March 2, 2012 U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Janet Napolitano has appointed Dr. Gail O. Mellow, President of LaGuardia Community College, to the Homeland Security Academic Advisory Council (HSAAC). The new council, comprised of prominent university presidents and academic leaders, is charged with advising the Secretary and senior leadership at the Department on several key issues.  


“Dr. Mellow’s extensive experience and expertise will make her a valuable asset to the Council," said Secretary Napolitano. "I look forward to working with her on these critical issues."

The new council underscores the Department's commitment to working with the academic community. In this noteworthy role, Dr. Mellow will provide advice and recommendations on issues related to student and recent graduate recruitment; international students; academic research; campus and community resiliency, security and preparedness; and faculty exchanges.

"Community colleges are on the frontlines of providing quality and affordable education to millions of Americans,” said Dr. Mellow. “I am honored to represent LaGuardia Community College, and all our nation's community colleges, through the work with this council and the Department of Homeland Security."

Dr. Mellow, a national leader in community college reform, has served as the President of LaGuardia since 2000. LaGuardia is a nationally recognized leader among community colleges for its boundary-breaking success educating underserved students.

Dr. Mellow has received numerous awards, sits on various boards and has presented to audiences throughout the country on the vital role that community colleges play in educating students for a global economy and spurring job creation.

In addition to numerous articles and editorials about issues facing higher education in America, Dr. Mellow co-authored Minding the Dream: The Process and Practice of the American Community College (Rowman & Littlefield, 2008).

Dr. Mellow will attend the group's inaugural meeting on March 20 in Washington, D.C.
